This opening introduction will provide a quick overview of the key points in dermatology examination in primary care and a reminder of how best to describe your findings.

During this session you will learn more about the management of your patients who present with rashes or spots on their face.  This will include cases relating to:
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Seborrhoeic  dermatitis

Psoriasis
Our expert speaker will provide an update on psoriasis, including a summary of the important points for primary care in the new NICE guidelines.  This will include:
  • Important points in the history to judge the severity of the disease
  • Assessing for involvement of the joints

  • When to refer for dermatology opinion
  • The impact of psoriasis and wider health implications of the condition.

Practical tips for topical treatment
This session will provide some practical tips for your treatments of skin conditions:

  • The use of topical steroids
  • How to effectively inform your patients on their treatment and encourage compliance

Cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease
Learn more about the importance of recognising dermatological presentations as a sign of possible systemic disease.  Examples of conditions that may have skin manifestations are lymphoma, connective tissue disease,
inflammatory bowel disease, and diabetes.  Our speaker will talk about:
  • Important rashes and skin lesions to identify that may be incidental findings in your patients
  • Further investigations that would be advised
  • Drug reactions.

Recognising skin cancer
This session will increase your confidence in recognising basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, and will briefly cover other rare but important cancers. This will include “red flag” signs that indicate a need for urgent referral. You will have the opportunity to see plenty of pictures and our speakers will provide guidance on the best approach to assessing your patients with suspicious skin lesions
