0910-0920 Welcome and introduction by the Chair
0920-1000 Acute coronary syndromes: STEMI and non-STEMI
The modern management of acute coronary syndromes (STEMI and non-STEMI) involves emergent and urgent revascularisation. In this session, two experts will cover the evidence for this approach, patient selection, risk stratification, and treatment pathways, as well as the medical and interventional management of such patients.

The evidence

Professor Keith Fox
Professor of Cardiology, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh
1000-1040 Acute coronary syndromes: STEMI and non-STEMI

The practice – case examples

Dr Chris Baker
Consultant Cardiologist, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Hammersmith Hospital, London
1040-1100 REFRESHMENTS
1100-1140 Managing cardiac arrhythmias
In this session, two expert speakers will outline their approach to managing cardiac arrhythmias. You will learn to:
  • Use the ECG to recognise the type and mechanism of arrhythmia
  • Recognise the conditions that lead to wide complex tachycardia
  • Approach diagnosis and treatment, using ECG features as a guide to further investigations.
The evidence

Dr Wyn Davies
Consultant Cardiologist, St. Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London
1140-1220 Managing cardiac arrhythmias

The practice: case examples

Dr Edward Rowland

Consultant Cardiologist, The Heart Hospital, University College London Hospital, London
1220-1300 Breakout sessions
Acute coronary syndromes / Cardiac arrhythmias
Breakout session with the speakers from stable angina and cardiac arrhythmias
The breakout sessions will provide an opportunity for delegates to interact directly with the expert speakers, and will facilitate discussion around hot topics and controversies in the diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndromes and cardiac arrhythmias.
1300-1345 LUNCH
1345-1430 Sponsored Symposium supported by Servier Laboratories Ltd
Contemporary Treatment of Stable Coronary Artery Disease            Servier Laboratories

Dr Laura Corr
Consultant Cardiologist, Guy's Hospital, London
1430-1510 Valvular heart disease: when are percutaneous techniques appropriate?
In this session, the speakers will outline the evidence supporting different percutaneous techniques including balloon valvuloplasty for mitral stenosis, percutaneous mitral valve repair, and the new transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) technique. TAVI is the current focus of development in cardiac intervention for replacement of stenotic aortic valves, and the session will include a discussion of its indications and outcomes. In addition the speakers will discuss practical aspects of using these techniques and associated problems through case examples.

The evidence

Dr Bernard Prendergast
Consultant Cardiologist, The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford
1510-1530 REFRESHMENTS
1530-1610 Valvular heart disease: when are percutaneous techniques appropriate?

The practice: case examples

Dr Martyn Thomas
Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Services, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, St Thomas’ Hospital, London
1610-1700 Medicolegal vignettes – how to stay out of trouble
Patients with acute cardiological conditions often require rapid management and mistakes may have fatal consequences. This session will deal with common errors and how you can be vigilant and avoid making such errors.
